Banzhaf
Veteran Perspective
For 21 years Shawn Banzhaf served the United States in the Army National Guard. He is an Iraqi War Veteran, during which he earned the Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge during 100 combat missions in and around Baghdad, Ramadi and Fallujah. He shared his story in Since You Asked XX. Shawn is the creator and author of the 5 Ls: A Practical Guide for Helping Loved Ones Heal After Trauma. Since 2022, Shawn has served as the executive director of the Pat Tillman Veterans Center at Arizona State University.

Student Perspective
Titus Tipton, a Senior at Sunrise Mountain High School in Peoria, is starting his second year in the program and currently serves as his school's Chapter President. Titus interviewed a Gold Star mother, and a Vietnam Veteran, participated in civic engagement activities such as Wreaths Across America, and shared his perspective as a new student as part of our Teacher Advisor training. Having grown up in a military family, Titus has his own aspirations to attend a military academy and serve in the Armed Forces.

Teacher Perspective
Steve Millam, a Physics and Astrophysics teacher at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Arizona, took on the added responsibility of serving as a Chapter Advisor in 2013. He shows great diligence in honoring the veterans his chapter interviews, and also in developing each student in his chapter. Steve received our Founder's Award for in 2021 for program excellence, has organized 84 veteran interviews during his 11 years volunteering, and also encourages history teachers to host veteran speaker visits.
